CUW receives nearly $700,000 in funding requests
CHENANGO COUNTY – This year’s Chenango United Way campaign is in full swing, and with all of the requests for money in, organizers are hoping they will come close to funding the 22 programs.
Both the number of requests and the total dollars requested were lower than last year, but according to CUW Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, that isn’t because there is less need.
“Last year some programs submitted multiple requests,” Monaco said. She explained that some of the programs were competing against themselves for funding. “This year, through our technical assistance, we asked organizations to narrow their focus and that no program submit more than one.”
As a result, the total number of requests dropped from 32 to 22 this year, and since the maximum request is $40,000, total dollars requested also dropped from $921,000 last year to $695,899 this year.
Over the coming months, the requests will be assigned to a review panel, made up of United Way board members and community volunteers. Each request will be reviewed and graded, and at the close of the campaign, allocations will be determined.
“Even though the requests are less than before, with the economic hardships facing individuals this year, it’s important that the United Way raise enough money to fund all of the programs,” Monaco said.
The CUW set a campaign goal of $465,000 this year. According to Campaign Coordinator Victoria Mitchell, the organization has currently raised approximately 12 percent of that amount.
Mitchell said several of the smaller businesses’ internal campaigns have been completed, and things are looking good. “So far, the campaigns that have been completed are meeting or exceeding their goals. We’re feeling positive about this year’s campaign,” she said.
In addition to monetary support, individuals can also support the CUW with just a click of the mouse. The United Way is utilizing two charitable web sites this year. Goodsearch.com is a Yahoo powered search engine that donates one cent to a charity of your choice, every time you search the web. The search engine’s sister site, goodshop.com has links to many popular shopping sites, including Amazon, 1-800-Flowers, Ebay and many others. When you shop on the sites through goodshop.com, a portion of your total purchase will be donated to a specified charity.
“With the holiday shopping season coming up, this is an easy way to give,” Mitchell said.
The campaign coordinator said she wants to thank everyone who has donated to the campaign so far, and that she hopes individuals will continue to support their community by donating to the United Way. “We couldn’t continue to help the community without the support of our donors,” Mitchell said.
