Punching the Clock: Work is hard play
It’s not often that I come across a job that’s more fun than mine, but after spending an evening working at Nowich’s new kid-based fun center, Kids Kingdom, I think I’ve found just that.
Kids Kingdom officially opened its doors last Friday, and with word spreading about all of the fun activities available at their Lee Avenue location, owners Lesley Ann and Jason Lawrence say it has been busier than anticipated this early in the game.
“It’s been really exciting. People have come in and we’re getting good feedback,” Lesley said. More than 17 kids passed through the doors the first day, and the second day, the location was the site of a birthday party.
I arrived at Kids Kingdom at around 6:30 on Wednesday night, and already, several kids were enjoying the large play area. I spent a few minutes chatting with the owners and drinking a cup of coffee in the parent lounge area. I could have spent a lot longer there. With wireless Internet, comfortable seating and a massage chair, all with a clear view of the play area, it would be easy to spend some time there, but instead I got to work.
I’m using the term “work” loosely here. For the majority of the evening, I was playing along side the little kids who were running around the 5,000 square foot play area.
I played in the ball pit – where I made three or four new best friends – and watched a game of indoor kick ball that was taking place in the center of the room. My new friends were not eager to leave the ball pit, but after a considerable amount of time, we decided to move on to the indoor climbing gym.
Complete with a second ball pit, a climbing area and a massive slide, the climbing gym was not only fun for the kids, it was fun for me too. (I think I need to convince someone to install one in our office.)
In addition to the ball pits and the climbing gym, Kids Kingdom also has areas set up for infants and toddlers, which include ride-on toys and age-appropriate items. They have an indoor basketball hoop, an air hockey table, a climbing wall, a teeter-totter and many other fun toys for the kids to enjoy.
To keep the play area new and exciting for the kids, the Lawrences have additional toys that they will rotate into the play area, so there is always something new.
During business hours, most of the work was play, but once the kids were gone for the evening, the real work began; cleaning up. The Lawrences want Kids Kingdom to be a clean and safe environment for children, which means there is a lot of regular cleaning that has to be done. To keep the area clean and safe, the mats are vacuumed and mopped daily, the tables and play areas are wiped down every night and the ball pit is cleaned every day. Every two days, all of the balls (14,000) are removed from the ball pit to clean the inside, and once every two weeks, all of the balls in the pit are cleaned.
It was easy to see that the kids were enjoying themselves. When it came time to leave, more than one child asked for five more minutes or cried when they had to go. That doesn’t always put a smile on a parent’s face, but it speaks volumes about the nature of the business.
After only a week of operation, Lesley is already thinking about the things she would like to add. Currently, Kids Kingdom offers drop-in daycare on a limited basis. Customers who call ahead could leave a child over the age of three for up to two and a half hours. In the future, Lesley said she would like to add a full pre-school program, but that is a long term plan. “We want to grow a bigger customer base here before we build on,” she said.
I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at Kids Kingdom, and I plan on returning to visit every chance I get. I might even let my kid tag along.
Kids Kingdom is located above The Label Gallery, 1-11 Lee Ave. in Norwich. They are open from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Kids from age one to 12 can play all day for $6 with parent supervision. Children under 1 can play for $3. The grand opening of Kids Kingdom will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.
