Oxford Primary School pitches in to help rescued dogs
OXFORD – The story of the 76 Pomeranians seized by Sheriff’s Deputies and the SPCA from an Oxford property earlier this month has touched the hearts of many.
None more than Oxford resident Rebecca Doing, who lived near the property from which the dogs were rescued. “I could hear them barking,” she said.
For Doing it was a relief to know that the animals are now safe at the SPCA, but she is still concerned for the Pomeranians.
Knowing that the SPCA doesn’t normally house that many dogs, Doing set about gathering supplies to donate to the shelter.
“I’ve been trying to put the word out,” she said.
Doing, an employee at Oxford Primary School, decided to get the students involved. With permission from the administration, she wrote a letter to parents requesting help gathering the much needed supplies. The letter went home with the Primary school students on Oct. 17 in their Friday Folders.
The response was immediate. Both students and the school’s faculty and staff brought in items from the list Doing provided. The supplies included paper towels, bleach, disinfectant wipes, stainless steel bowls and lot of old newspaper.
The donations were collected in the Primary School Multipurpose Room throughout the week and delivered to the SPCA on Oct. 24.
“We really, truly appreciate their thoughtfulness,” said SPCA Executive Director Carol Hedlund. “They brought us so many of the things we truly need to care for our animals.”
The shelter’s normal capacity is at most a dozen dogs, so resources have been stretched to the limits with the effort to accommodate an additional 77 animals. According to Hedlund, community donations go a long way toward making that possible.
“We’re obviously going to continue needing cleaning supplies, garbage bags, etc.,” said Hedlund. “And monetary donations are always a great way to help the animals.”
There is also another way for people to help out. “We’re using a lot of bath towels,” the executive director explained. “So if [community members] want to donate some of their older bath towels, we would appreciate that too.”
