UTICA – Democrats may have scored impressive gains across much of the country Tuesday, but the race between incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael A. Arcuri and his Republican challenger Richard L. Hanna for the 24th Congressional District seat isn’t in the win column for either party – yet.

Hanna, a Cooperstown businessman making his first foray into politics, received 103,520 votes while Arcuri, a first-term member of the House of Representatives who had not been considered particularly vulnerable by national party leaders, received 105,858, with approximately 98 percent of the votes counted, according to unofficial results provided by the boards of election in the 11 counties that are covered by the district. The figures do not include approximately 6,000 absentee ballots or results from nine of the 528 election districts in the congressional district.

Hanna won Broome, Tioga, Herkimer and was leading by about 750 votes in Arcuri’s home county of Oneida, according to the election boards in those counties. Arcuri won Otsego, Tompkins, Cayuga, Ontario, Cortland, Seneca and Chenango counties. Arcuri received 8,640 in Chenango County, while Hanna pulled in 8,501, according to the board of elections.
