Adult day care centers to close
NORWICH – Chenango County Area Agency on Aging adult day care centers in Norwich and Greene will close Nov. 14 after 14 years of service.
According to AAA’s Director Debra Sanderson, few seniors were availing themselves of the care offered, but those who did will be referred to other agency programs and county care providers.
Three part-time workers will lose their jobs. The cut will save Chenango County $30,000 per year and help trim the agency’s projected $1 million budget for 2009.
Prior to stamping their approval of the department’s plans for next year, members of the Finance Committee agreed to spend $8,000 on the purchase of 10 new Lifeline devices. The agency replaced 40 outdated devices last year.
Slightly more than 2 percent in state revenues was cut from the department this year. Sanderson said any further take-backs could affect the Meals On Wheels nutrition program and further delay personal care services for elderly persons already on a waiting list.
“We get X amount of dollars to fund our programs no matter how many people we have who need them,” the director said. “We have identified more and more people who can benefit from them.”
There are 57 seniors currently on the waiting list for personal aides. Home health care services delay their placement into nursing homes, Sanderson said.
The director also said energy costs are having a “huge effect” on the senior population. “I have had people tell us that instead of paying some of their other housing and medications costs, that they’ve had to shift money around for fuel ... and even cashed in a life insurance policy to pay for fuel,” she said.
