United Way campaign reaches 84 percent of goal

CHENANGO COUNTY – More than a month before the end of this year’s Chenango United Way campaign, the organization has already hit 84 percent of its goal.
Although the campaign runs another month, the CUW has already received approximately $390,600 in donations, and with many corporations still completing their internal campaigns, the campaign season is off to a great start.
“A lot of the company campaigns we’ve seen so far have been substantially higher this year than they were last year,” said Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco. She explained that participation at many of the companies is up this year. “So many of the companies are exceeding their goal, and we still have several more coming in over the next week or so.”
Although the campaign is running through Dec. 31, the United Way is hoping to receive as many donations as possible by Nov. 21. Anyone who submits their donation of at least $1 a week by Nov. 21 will be eligible to win one of two prizes; a 32 inch flat screen, LCD television, valued at approximately $500, and a $500 gas card. This year’s prizes were donated by Manpower and Mirabito Fuel Group.
“Nov. 21 is the critical deadline for anyone who wants to be eligible for the drawing,” said Campaign Coordinator Victoria Mitchell. The prize drawing will be held at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4. The drawing can be heard live on the Norwich radio station, WBKT 95.3.
The Chenango United Way is encouraging new donors to give $1 a week to the campaign, and asking returning donors to increase their donation by $1 a week. “We’re calling it the dollar challenge. Giving $1 a week out of your own pocket isn’t much, even in hard economic times, but when you add up all the people in the community who could give $1 a week, we could easily pass our campaign goal,” Monaco said in an earlier interview.
This year, the CUW received requests from 22 different community partners for nearly $700,000 in funding. They are hoping to come close to funding all of the programs this year.
