Norwich prepares for 14th annual Parade of Lights

NORWICH – The streets of Norwich will be bright on Saturday night as the 14th annual Christmas to Remember Parade of Lights travels through downtown Norwich.
The parade, which serves as Norwich’s official kick off to the holiday season, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants in the parade will line up on the side streets on the south side of downtown Norwich and will travel down Broad Street, from Eaton Ave. to Fair Street.
This year’s parade will include 52 units, including 24 floats and several police and fire department entries. “This is the largest number of floats we’ve ever had in competition,” said parade organizer Linda Green. In addition to the floats, there will be a bagpiper, a marching band, a pipe band, clowns and horses.
Before the parade begins, local singer Cassidy Lynn will be entertaining the crowd. Lynn, a former Sherburne resident who recently moved to Nashville to pursue her singing career, has opened for national country acts.
One of the highlights of this year’s parade, according to Green, will be the addition of equestrian entertainer J.D. Winslow. Winslow came to Chenango County earlier this year as part of the Chenango County Fair and now he will be returning to thrill the audience with his equestrian acts. Winslow will be demonstrating Roman Riding, with the help of his two Brabant Draft Horses. Roman Riding is a type of horseback riding where the rider stands with one foot on the back of each horse.
Several other horses and their owners will also be taking part in this year’s parade. Returning for another year will be the Whiting Hill Percherons. This year, the horses will be pulling a carriage carrying City of Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano and his family.
In addition, the parade will include a special appearance from some visitors to our North. Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and some elves will be traveling to town to take part in the yearly festivities.
Following the parade, Santa will be in the igloo in East Park to take Christmas requests. Parents are welcome to bring a camera if they would like a picture.
Green explained that the annual parade, along with the tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 4. serve to kickoff the holiday season in Chenango County. “All of these events are held to help us enjoy our beautiful downtown parks and local shopping,” Green said.
Prizes will be awarded to winners in the Best Float category and the Best Fire Department Float Category.
