Norwich BID holds 12th Annual Tree Lighting tonight

NORWICH – The parks in downtown Norwich will take on a festive look tonight as the Norwich Business Improvement District holds its 12th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in West Park.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a performance on the steps of the court house. Perry Browne Students, led by music teacher Dave Kirsch will perform seven holiday songs for the crowd to enjoy.
“We have more students singing this year than ever before,” said BID Executive Director Pegi LoPresti. Nearly 240 students will take part in tonight’s performance.
Three students, whose names will be drawn at the event, will have the opportunity to assist Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano and Santa Claus himself as they throw the switch to light up the downtown parks at 7.
“This event is held to see the results of Stu Chase’s efforts decorating the parks,” LoPresti said. Chase, a Norwich resident, volunteers his time to the project every year. LoPresti explained that Chase accepts donations of broken lights, fixes them and uses them to decorate the downtown area. “Stu is a volunteer who does this year after year. He was been working to decorate the parks since the conclusion of the Pumpkin Festival,” LoPresti said. “The BID is grateful for his involvement.”
LoPresti said the BID is also grateful for the support of Rhett Genung from Rock Star DJ, who donates sound equipment for the event, and the Norwich Fire Department for helping to spotlight the singers.
The tree lighting will take place immediately after the Perry Browne students conclude their performance. Following the tree lighting, LoPresti said the BID and the Norwich Merchants’ Association will be handing out free movie coupons for a special children’s holiday movie at the Colonia Theater. The movie will be shown at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20. “The movie coupons are free to children and their families on a first come first serve basis,” LoPresti explained.
In addition to the tree lighting ceremony, Santa will officially begin his regular hours in the igloo located in East Park in Norwich tonight. Santa will be at the igloo Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Parents are invited to bring a camera if they would like to get a photo.
“We hold this event on Thursday because many of the merchants are traditionally open late on Thursday nights. This is a great chance to visit our local merchants and see what they have to offer,” LoPresti said.
