Norwich tough down the stretch
Norwich 65, Oneonta 56
NORWICH – Oneonta had Norwich’s number last season, perhaps it is the Tornado’s turn at role reversal.
Norwich used an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good, and received career-high nights from seniors Corey Dietrich and Vaughn Labor to move to 2-0 on the season.
“It was an important win,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We’ve lost some tough games to them over the last two years. We seemed to play them tough and come up short. Tonight, at the end, we had too many weapons for them.”
Dietrich scored 25 points on a variety of drives to the basket, penetrating moves, and even a pair of dead-on three balls. Labor worked exclusively in the painted area hammering the Oneonta interior to the tune of 23 points. It was a contrast to Wednesday’s opening win over Sidney in which six players had at least six points.
“I thought our team did a really nice job recognizing offensively where our points were coming from,” Abbott said. “A lot of times, guys made the extra pass to get the ball to Vaughn or Corey, and let them use their ability to score. They’re a tough tandem.”
Alex Mirabito scored 25 points for Oneonta, and his wide-open three ball in the first minute of the fourth quarter pushed Oneonta in front for the last time, 46-45.” Mirabito is a heck of a player,” Abbott said. “Fortunately for us, he was their only consistent scorer.”
Timmy Clark drove the lane and drew a foul on the next possession, and he hit two free throws for the 47-46 lead. Labor followed with a post-up layup, Dietrich spun in the lane and canned a banker from about eight feet, and Labor put back a missed Derek Hughes shot to make it a 53-46 game.
Clark, Dietrich, and Labor combined for 5-for-6 foul shooting over the final 40.2 seconds to put the game away.
The two clubs traded the lead five times in the first quarter, and Ty Southard’s three-pointer from the left corner with two seconds left pushed OHS in front, 14-13. The razor-thin, tenuous leads that each team held was maintained until the final seconds of the half. Mirabito’s pull-up jumper near the halftime horn deadlocked the game at 30-apiece.
Norwich seemed to take control late in the third quarter. A spinning layup by Dietrich with 1:12 left made it 43-39. Mirabito answered with a jumper and two free throws stemming the momentum and keeping his club within two points entering the fourth.
“The first half was pretty much the same as (Wednesday against Sidney),” Abbott said. “We were ineffective offensively in the first half. We got the same looks, and did a better job putting the ball in the basket in the second half.”
