Sheriff is warning area residents to lock up their homes

NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is telling local citizens to step up their home security efforts after a spur of burglaries recently.
Detective Sgt. Richard Cobb said that two homes were vandalized and a car stolen between 10 p.m. last Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday. Cobb said in all three cases, residents had left their doors unlocked. The two occupied home invasions took place with the homeowners asleep inside.
“They went to bed Tuesday night and woke up Wednesday morning to find that they were a victim. Perpetrators were in the occupied homes and did not wake up the victims,” he said.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department wants people to be aware of these local incidents so they can take precautions, explained Cobb.
Police recommend the following:
• Doors and windows remain locked, especially at night or when unoccupied.
• Install exterior lighting at the entrances to your home.
• Have a professional installed alarm system.
Cobb said the crimes took place near the town lines of Norwich, North Norwich and South Plymouth along County Rt. 44, Country Club Rd.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact Sheriff’s Office at 337-1924.
