Delivering Christmas – Six on the Square

Sunday afternoon I found myself in 6 On The Square, Oxford’s unique non-profit music and art venue, taking in the sights and sounds of their second annual Holiday Tea.
The event combined seasonal music performed by the United Church of Oxford’s Praise Band under the direction of Francis Wilcox with the organization’s Holiday Shoppe, an array of handcrafted products on consignment from local artists.
And, of course, there were plenty of tasty tidbits and hot beverages available at the snack bar. My favorite were sand tarts baked according to the 200-year-old family recipe of 6 On the Square’s very own Nancy Morey.
While you needed cash to purchase those items, you didn’t need any for a cover charge. Admission to the Holiday Tea was free with a contribution of non-perishable food items for the Oxford Food Pantry.
According to Morey, it is all part of the venue’s mission of supporting local communities and artists as well as being environmentally friendly.
Doors opened at 1:30 p.m., but I arrived a little bit earlier so that I’d have time to peruse the items in the Holiday Shoppe. I was not disappointed; there was a little bit of everything on offer. Pottery, soaps, fiber art made from hand-dyed wool, locally roasted coffee, ornaments, jewelry and hand carved wooden ornaments and toys. It always amazes me that we have so many talented people in our area communities.
Lining the walls of 6 On The Square are quilted landscapes by Elena Marin. These are definitely not your grandmother’s quilts. The brightly colored, intricate designs are truly works of art.
I’ll admit, I’ve struggled to get into the holiday spirit this year. That all changed when the musical performance began at a little after 2. Originally just Mr. Wilcox and the group’s brass quartet were expected to play, but once word got out other members of the group were eager to participate as well.
“They really like to give back to the community,” Morey told me.
The group practices Sunday mornings and performs once a month at the United Church of Oxford.
A total of 11 musicians, mostly brass and woodwinds, trickled in on Sunday. They crowded the stage during the performance, which consisted of carols and traditional Christmas music.
If you missed Sunday’s performance, have no fear. There are more opportunities to hear the sounds of the season and partake of the Holiday Shoppe’s merchandise.
The Praise Band will perform at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve at the church as a prelude to the Candlelight Service which begins at 7:30 p.m. They have also been asked to perform across town, at the United Methodist Church on South Washington, later that same evening as part of Midnight services.
The Holiday Shoppe will have special hours this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Shoppe will also be open during regular events at 6 on the Square between now and Christmas. For a complete listing, visit their website at www.6onthesquare.org.
6 On The Square will continue to collect nonperishable food items for the Oxford Food Pantry during these events as well.
