Police investigating brutal assault in Oxford
OXFORD – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the assault of an Oxford man which took place Thursday in the village.
According to Lieutenant James Lloyd, the investigation is ongoing. He declined to comment further on the case.
A source close to the case reported that a person of interest had been taken to a psychiatric facility in Broome County for evaluation following the Thursday morning incident.
The victim, a 49-year-old Oxford man, said he was struck in the head at approximately 4:15 on the morning in question while walking his dog on North Washington Ave.
“It’s been a nightmare,” said the victim, who claims the attack was entirely unprovoked. He said he didn’t even exchange words with his assailant before being struck.
The blow rendered the 6’4”, 230 pound man unconscious.
“My God, if it had been anyone else ...” he said, trailing off. The handyman/contractor fears what the result had been if someone of a smaller stature had been the victim of the attack.
When he came to, he was lying on the sidewalk, unsure of the extent of his injuries.
“How I got home, I don’t know,” said the victim. He credits his dog with leading him back to his residence on the other side of town, where his girlfriend called police.
The Sheriff’s Department responded promptly, he said, and he gave a statement before being taken to the emergency room at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
The victim reported that he was treated for a “blow out fracture of the orbital floor,” an extreme concussion and received several stitches before being released.
The man said he has been assured by the Sheriff’s Department that the perpetrator will be “prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” but he will feel much safer once an arrest has been made.
