Delivering Christmas – Toys for Tots

When The Evening Sun’s float won first place in this year’s Holiday Parade of Lights, we knew we wanted to take our winnings and donate them to a good cause. Yesterday, we did just that.
After weeks of brainstorming ideas, we decided to help the annual Toys for Tots campaign. Chris Ulatowski, the owner of The Label Gallery and the coordinator of the campaign, told me that there was usually a shortage of gifts for children in the 8 to 12-year-old range.
The Evening Sun staff decided to purchase $200 worth of books to help promote literacy and encourage reading, while helping Toys for Tots at the same time.
On Tuesday, Melissa Stagnaro and I took our prize winnings and headed to First Edition Bookstore in Norwich.
We took our time picking out books. We didn’t want to grab just anything. Instead we looked for books that we had enjoyed as children (and many that we still enjoy now.)
We spent over an hour in the store picking out the books, and when the bookstore employees heard what we were doing, they decided to give us a 20 percent discount, so our money could stretch even farther. In total we ended up with almost 40 books to donate to the Toys for Tots program.
Toys for Tots collects toys for children from birth through age 12. The Label Gallery has been running the Chenango County campaign for the last five years. Although Wednesday was the last day to donate toys to the campaign, you can get more information about next year’s campaign by calling The Label Gallery at 334-3244.
