Local author signs “Souvenirs” book tonight
NORWICH – With six shopping days left until Christmas, First Edition bookstore is giving shoppers a reason to consider shopping locally this weekend. The downtown Norwich bookstore will hold two events this weekend, to encourage people to come into the store and pick up their last-minute Christmas gifts.
Tonight, local author Donald Windsor will hold a book signing. Windsor, who recently released his book “Souvenirs of Yesteryear, Volume 1” will be signing copies of his book from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Souvenirs of Yesteryear” is a compilation of articles Windsor has published in The Evening Sun over the years. The articles center around the history of Chenango County. Volume 1 covers articles published from 2001 to 2003.
To date, Windsor has published 208 of his historical articles in The Evening Sun. He plans to release a total of five volumes of local history. The first volume contains 44 stories about different areas of the county.
“‘Souvenirs of Yesteryear’ was a local history column in The Evening Sun that I wrote to encourage an appreciation of historical remains. I was, and still am, appalled by the reckless destruction of anything old,” Windsor explains in the book’s preface.
“I am really excited about this event,” said Mody. The bookstore owner said anyone who is interested in local history will enjoy reading “Souvenirs of Yesteryear.” In addition, she said, the book is a great gift idea for dads, husbands and those interested in the history of Chenango County.
On Saturday, the bookstore will hold their annual “Polar Express” event. Children and parents are invited to listen as Bill Brower performs a one-man reading of the classic children’s tale.
“The Polar Express” tells the story of a midnight train ride that transports children from their homes to the North Pole on the night of Christmas eve. Brower will perform the reading, as he has done in the past, by acting out the story, one character at a time.
Children are invited to attend the event in their pajama if they would like. Owner of First Edition, Lisa Mody explained that since the book takes place at night, all of the characters are dressed in their pajamas, and the children in attendance are invited to do the same.
The performance will begin around 12:15 on Satuday. The event will conclude with a suprise appearance by Santa Claus.
