DERUYTER – DeRuyter avenged a loss to Otselic Valley earlier this month winning its home tournament championship Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings shot less than 30 percent from the field for the game, and just 43 percent from the foul line. Still, it took a big fourth quarter by the Rockets (22-12) to pull away for the victory. “We got plenty of looks and played well enough to win, we just didn’t shoot it well enough,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “It takes points to win games, and you have to credit DeRuyter’s defense. They did a nice job all night long.”
Justin Shapley scored 14 points and Dave Cerasani added 11 for the Vikings.
Friday, OV jumped out to a 39-15 halftime lead over G-MU to advance to the championship game.
With G-MU’s top scorer, Cody Hall, sitting much of the game with foul trouble, the Vikings had too much firepower. “Our pressure defense was able to create some turnovers, and we were able to get out in transition and score some easy baskets,” Loomis said.
Shapley led the Vikes with 12 points, and Tyler Wildfeir paced G-MU with 15 markers.
