Quintet Bua brings Irish music to 6 On The Square

OXFORD – Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., the talented Irish quintet Bua rings in the New Year at 6 On The Square (6OTS). Meaning ‘innate gift’ in Gaelic, Bua (pronounced: boo-ah), have quickly risen to the status of America’s premier traditional Irish music ensemble. Come join them at 6OTS as part of their CD Release Tour for their third Bua CD “An Spealadoir.”
Bua’s five young musicians are Chris Bain, Sean Gavin, Jackie Moran, Brian Miller and Brían Ó hAirt. Chris, on fiddle, was highly influenced by fiddlers of the Sligo and Donegal styles, is Bua’s instrumental heart. Seán, on flute and uilleann pipes, although young is a well seasoned performer, who has toured North America and Europe with his ornate, driving style. Jackie, a highly sought-after bodhrán player, is known for his vibrant and articulate drumming which is key to Bua’s dynamic rhythm section. Guitarist Brian Miller’s tune backing and song accompaniments have earned him a strong reputation as one of the best guitarists on the scene today. Completing and complimenting Bua’s unique sound is Brían Ó hAirt’s evocative voice; the youngest and only American to become a champion All-Ireland singer. A voice Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh of Danú hails as, “Beautiful … sweet and full of sensitivity.”
Individually, members of this group have won many national and international awards in their respective musical talent arenas. Coming together as Bua, they have received accolades for keeping true to the traditional music of Ireland. It’s no wonder they have been described by Irish Music Magazine as, “The essence of a superb band!” If you love traditional Irish music, played with energy and passion, this is an evening for you! Purchase tickets on-line at the discounted price of $12 until the date of the performance; $15 at the door on the day of the show.
6OTS is continuing to collect food items for the Oxford Food Pantry; you may drop them in the basket as you enter. The Pantry sincerely thanks the generous community for your past donations.
Don’t miss future performances by: ZT (the Zany Trio) and Friends on Jan. 17; Melissa Clark, Ned Brower, and Jessica Sheldon on Jan. 31; and Tom Rasely and Scott B. Adams on Feb. 7. All shows are at 7:30 p.m, with doors opening at 6:30. Visit the website at www.6onthesquare.org for tickets and future event information.
