Commerce Chenango celebrates 50 years

NORWICH – Commerce Chenango, formerly known as the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce, has served the area’s business community for 50 years. They celebrated this important milestone with a gala event Saturday night.
“Today, we hold true to the original mission of the Chenango County Chamber to offer a foundation of benefits that can help member businesses grow and prosper and thereby promote the economic well being of Chenango County,” said Maureen Carpenter, president and CEO of Commerce Chenango.
The organization was incorporated on Jan. 17, 1959 when the Norwich Chamber of Commerce expanded its reach to encompass all of Chenango County. In doing so, it became the first county chamber in New York State.
Carpenter was joined in recognizing the chamber’s accomplishments by two of the organization’s past leaders, Tammy Carnrike and Marylou Stewart.
“It’s this organization which has really built this community out the way it has,” said Carnrike, who served as president from 1995 to 2005.
She gave credit for the chamber’s success to the staff, local business leaders and volunteers and praised the ability of the area’s public and private sectors to collaborate on worthwhile projects.
“The fact that the organization is 50 years old and still going strong is really a testament,” said Stewart, who held the chamber’s top post for 23 years, from 1972 to 2005.
Of the chamber’s many notable accomplishments during her long tenure as president, Stewart said that one in particular stood out.
“The (Chenango) Foundation has been a tremendous asset to this organization,” she said, speaking of the organization within the chamber responsible for starting both the Leadership Chenango program and The Children’s Center.
Stewart said the Chamber’s greatest strength has been “visionary people who are willing to take chances and step up to the plate.” With hardworking and visionary leadership, she predicted it will continue to thrive for the next 50 years as well.
Carpenter and Barbara Schindler, chairperson of Commerce Chenango’s board of directors, took the opportunity to recognize 32 companies who have been chamber members since its incorporation. Each was presented with a framed certificate celebrating their 50 years of membership.
The event, held at the Canasawacta Country Club, was sponsored by M&T Bank, Frontier, P&G Pharmaceuticals, GrafiQa Creative Services and Sidney Federal Credit Union.
A Commemorative Souvenir Book, providing a pictorial history and timeline of the chamber, was sponsored by Preferred Mutual Insurance Company.
