Y holds carnival night Friday
NORWICH – YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen doesn’t shy away from a challenge, even if that challenge includes allowing the public to throw pies in his face.
On Friday night, both Mullen and Senior Program Director Tom Revoir will step up to the plate and take one for the team, literally. As part of the YMCA’s monthly Family Fun Night, a Y Carnival will be held on Friday. The event will include games, prizes, carnival snacks and much more.
The Y Carnival will include games like the duck pond, a cookie walk and ‘guess my age.’ In addition, there will be face painting, a hot dog stand and other events for family members of all ages. “Everybody will have the chance to win some prizes,” said Youth and Family Director Bonnie Tiffany.
In addition to the other events offered, the YMCA is trying to help the local food pantry by providing the pie toss. Those who attend the event are invited to bring canned food. They will receive one pie toss for every can of food they bring. “I think this might be our most popular event,” Tiffany said. “Jamey and Tom have been good sports.”
The Y director said he didn’t take offense to the thought that allowing people to throw pies at him had the potential to bring in a lot of food for the food pantry. “It’s no problem,” Mullen said. “It’s going to an excellent cause. Hunger in Chenango County is a significant concern.”
Mullen said already, people have stopped him to warn that they will be attending Friday’s event armed with canned goods. “My kids at home have 20 cans of food lined up on the side,” Mullen said, he added that his wife has a collection of her own. However, the Y director said the event will help a good cause and help to educate people about the YMCA. “We use our organization to do good for other projects too,” Mullen said, pointing out a food drive this fall in which the Y offered a drawing for a free Nintendo Wii to those who participated. In addition, the pre-school and Universal Pre-Kindergarten class does a trike-a-thon each year to benefit the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Tiffany and the children in the after school and fun club programs have raised money for tsunami victims, Hurricane Katrina victims and victims of many other natural disasters.
Revoir, who will also be the target of the pie toss, had only one comment. “Bring it on.”
The Y’s Family Fun Night Carnival will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday in the YMCA community room and gymnasium. The event is free for all Y members. Non-members pay $2 per person. Children under 5 are free.
Next month, the Family Fun Night event will be a family Valentine’s ball.
