Mt. Markham 72, Sherburne-Earlville 63 (2 OT)
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s upset bid of unbeaten Mt. Markham came up short in double overtime Tuesday night.
Josh Pugh, the Center State Conference’s most valuable player last season, stuck a three-pointer between two S-E defenders with 1.5 seconds left in regulation to force the initial overtime at 54-54.
“(Pugh) had 29 points when we played them last Saturday, so we knew we had to contain him,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “He’s a great player, and for the most part we did contain him. He hit a big three, and that’s what good players do.”
The Marauders rode the hot shooting of Sean Boise and Caleb Brown to lead 27-24 at halftime. Boise had 15 at the break and Brown 10.
The Marauders seemed to take command late in the fourth quarter when senior Brett Nelson scored six straight points for his team to make it 53-49. The Marauders made just 3-of-7 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Mt. Markham in the game.
Brown scored a season-high 21 points to lead S-E (4-9), Boise added 18, and Cody Schraft 11. “We shot much better than we did the other night against them, and our kids should be proud of the way they played,” Vibbard said. “We had them, we just needed to make one more play.”
The Marauders visit Waterville Thursday.

Greene 58, Walton 37
GREENE – The Trojans pulled off a mid-season stunner dealing state-ranked Walton its first MAC loss this season, and just its second loss overall.
The Warriors, whose only previous loss was to Class A Oneonta, came in as the number three ranked Class C school team. “This is one of the biggest wins we’ve had in a while,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “It’s something we’ll savor for 24 hours, then move on.”
Greene executed its offense almost without incident shooting 12-for-16 from the field in a get-away fourth quarter. “They tried to pressure us, and we only turned it over once in the fourth quarter,” Paske said. “We had a lot of easy layups.”
The Trojans put 41 points on the board in the second half, a stark contrast to the first half when the host team held a slim 17-15 advantage. “We had the lead, but we needed to execute and finish,” Paske said. “We continued to contest shots, and we did a good job controlling the boards and getting to loose balls.”
Dustin Turner scored eight in the pivotal fourth stanza to finish with 14 points, six rebounds, six blocked shots, and four steals. Booker Davis had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Scott Gorton handed out six assists to go with 11 points. Turner and Dan Carlin added defensive stopper roles to their games holding Walton’s Chad Gardepe and Steve Kaminsky to six total points. The duo brought a combined average of 25 points into Tuesday’s contest.
Greene (3-1, 9-4) is at Delhi Friday.
