Demolition at old jail now slated for February
NORWICH – Demolition of the century-old steel cells at the former Chenango County Jail, separating the building from the former Sheriff’s Office, could begin as early as next month.
Contractors are currently removing asbestos from the two West Park Place buildings and installing safety fencing around the worksite’s perimeter. A storage shed and propane tank have been removed.
When renovated, the buildings will become additional office space for the Department of Social Services. The $2.8 million project has been in the works for more than two years. It is intended to relieve space constraints in the County Office Building located across Court Street.
