Local celebs “batter up” for a good cause
NORWICH – Local celebrities are dusting off their cookie sheets, tying on their aprons and stepping up to their batter bowls in support of The Children’s Center.
Among those baking up a storm for the good cause are NYS Senator Thomas Libous, Norwich City Police Chief Joe Angelino, Chenango County Court Justice Howard Sullivan, Norwich Mayor Joe Maiurano and a host of other business and community leaders.
The results of their efforts will be auctioned of at the center’s Cookies and Cream fundraiser, to be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Norwich Fire Station. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s scholarship fund.
“The Children’s Center is vital to working families,” explained Campaign Chair Martha Brower-Ryan. “[The Scholarship Fund] helps offset the cost of child care for families with financial needs, which now comprises 52 percent of all the children served by the center.”
Each celebrity was asked to bake two dozen of their favorite cookies, Ryan explained. One dozen will be put up for bid in a silent auction; the other will be judged by a panel of cookie experts.
‘The best cookie will be awarded the prestigious ‘Tastiest Celebrity Cookie Award,’” said Ryan. The coveted ‘Golden Cookie Award’ will go to the cookies which raise the most money in the silent auction.
To get the bidding started, Ryan has invited people to submit early bids via The Children’s Center website, www.thechildrencenter.org.
It’s not just the celebrities doing the baking. Ryan has also recruited volunteers to bake and donate cookies for the enjoyment of everyone who attends the family-friendly event, which is free and open to the public. There will, of course, be plenty of milk to wash them down.
The Ladies of Charity, Chenango County Sheriff Department, Subway Restaurant’s South Plaza location, local resident Rosemary Stacey, the employees of CWS employees and the staff at Sidney Federal Credit Union’s Norwich branch are among those donating cookies to the event.
There will be one variety of cookies not included in the event this year: Peanut butter.
“Respecting public concerns [regarding] the latest product recall announcements and to be careful with children’s allergies, we asked our volunteers to abstain from sending peanut butter cookies,” reported Ryan.
