S-E moves ahead with building project
SHERBURNE – The first phase of Sherburne-Earlville’s $25 million capital improvement project was approved by the State Education Department, clearing the way for construction to begin this summer.
According to Business Superintendent Thomas Strain, phase one makes up only about one fifth of the total project. “Phase one includes the construction of the band room at the elementary school, some other infrastructure items and work at the stadium to the concession stand,” he said.
The school will now be able to go out to bid for phase one, and Strain said they expect to break ground early this summer.
The S-E building project was approved by voters in December of 2007. The project calls for many improvements to the infrastructure, energy efficiency, security and capacity of the districts middle/high school building and elementary campus. The middle/high school is nearly 40 years old, while the elementary school was built approximately 13 years ago.
At Monday night’s meeting of the S-E Board of Education, the board heard discussion about the purchase of a proposed $500,000 generator that may be included in phase two of the project.
Strain explained that because of the cost of the generator, board members had some questions about alternatives, but he explained, there are several reasons the school needs the 1000-kilowatt generator. “First, there’s the question of what to do if there’s a power outage. We can’t send students home to empty houses,” Strain said. He explained that if such an outage were to occur in the morning, soon after school begins, it is difficult to even get the drivers back to the school to take students home.
The generator would have the capacity to power the entire middle/high school building. The elementary building already has an emergency backup system.
In addition, Strain explained that S-E is a designated shelter in emergency situations. “It only makes sense that under those conditions that we be able to power the entire building instead of just part of it,” Strain said.
After discussing the proposed purchase, Strain said the Board of Education agreed to include the large scale generator in the plans for phase two.
