S-E hosts color guard competition Saturday
SHERBURNE – Local residents don’t get many opportunities to watch the Sherburne-Earlville Winter Guard in action, but on Saturday, the squad will compete with 11 others at the S-E High School.
“Each year we hold one color guard competition at Sherburne-Earville,” said coach Becky Jantzen. “This is the only opportunity we have to do our exhibition for the community that supports us.” Jantzen explained that few area school districts have color guard, and because the color guard portion of the Pageant of the Bands was eliminated, there are few other opportunities to watch the team in action.
Saturday’s competition will include 11 area teams from the Central New York region. Teams from Laurens to Trumansburg will travel to the school to participate in the competition. “It gives us a chance to expose the local community to what we do,” Jantzen said. Each of the teams performing are part of the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit, but Jantzen explained there will be five different classes represented. Sherburne will compete in the SRA class.
The teams will perform their routines before a panel of judges from the New York Federation of Contest Judges.
The show will begin at 6 p.m. Jantzen said she expects the show to conclude before 9 p.m. Admission will be $6 at the door, with a special discounted rate for students and seniors. Children under 5 will be admitted at no charge.
Sherburne’s 11-member Winter Guard will perform the last routine of the evening. Jantzen said the Winter Guard members, ranging in age from 13 to 18, are excited about the season so far. “We’ve had two competitions so far, and we placed second and first respectively,” Jantzen said. “We’re doing well and we’re optimistic the rest of the season will be successful for us.”
Following Saturday’s competition, the S-E team will travel to Laurens for a competition and then to Syracuse for the remainder of the season. Jantzen said she wants to extend an open invitation to anyone in the area to come and check out Saturday’s show.
