DWI arrest ends with the suspect and deputy taking a cold swim

OTSELIC – A man pulled over for a traffic violation Monday fled his vehicle on foot, leading a Chenango County Sheriff’s deputy on a chase that eventually ended up with both in the Otselic River.
Michael Debottis, 21, Georgetown, was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and refusing to submit to a breath test, said the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 6:21 p.m. Monday, a sheriff’s road patrol pulled over Debottis’ pick-up truck along County Road 13 in the Town of Otselic for a routine traffic offense. After stopping his vehicle, Debottis suddenly opened his door and ran towards a wooded embankment near the Otselic River, deputies say.
Police immediately began chasing Debottis, who refused commands to stop. He was tackled by the deputy near the river’s edge, causing both men to fall into the frigid waters.
After subduing Debottis, police said they discovered he was intoxicated and uncovered a quantity of marijuana in his pick-up truck. Police also said he refused to submit to an alcohol chemical test at the scene.
He was arraigned in Town of Otselic Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail.
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
