Lions Club prepares for Perch Derby
NEW BERLIN – The Oxford Lions Club is busy preparing for this season’s Chenango Lake Perch Derby to be held on Feb. 7, with a postponement date of Feb. 21. This is the eleventh year the Perch Derby is sponsored by the Lions on Chenango Lake in the town of New Berlin.
A $1,000 cash award, sponsored by NBT Bank, will again be offered to the lucky angler who catches the first 2009 specially tagged perch at the Derby. NBT Bank has been a significant supporter of the Perch Derby for many years. In the event that no one catches a perch with a tag from 2009 on Derby Day or if the weather doesn’t cooperate and the Derby is canceled, the prize will be raffled off to those persons registered for the Perch Derby. Preferred Mutual is sponsoring the second prize of $500 which will be given to the person catching the second tagged perch of the day.
Prizes will be given away for the largest perch caught every 15 minutes of the Derby. There will also be several other prizes for successful anglers including the largest perch and pickerel caught during the day. Hot food and drinks will be served all day on the ice again this year.
Pre-registration is encouraged by completing a registration form and mailing it in with a $4 registration fee. Registration forms and further Perch Derby information are available at www.oxfordlions.org. The registration fee the day of the Derby will be $5.
The Oxford Lions Club is also offering a large raffle that will be drawn on Derby Day. The raffle will include numerous prizes, all of at least $100 in value. Tickets are available from any Oxford Lions Club member.
Proceeds from the Chenango Lake Perch Derby are used to support the many community and area projects that the Oxford Lions Club supports, such as eye examinations and eyeglasses for those in need.
