‘Super Saturday’ tax event this weekend
CHENANGO COUNTY– Chenango County’s Earned Income Tax Credit Program has brought over $1 million in tax refunds back to Chenango County residents since 2004, and with this year’s tax season upon us, the committee hopes to bring in even more.
On Saturday, the EITC Partnership Committee will hold its ‘Super Saturday’ to kick off this year’s tax season. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 99 N. Broad St., Norwich, the EITC Committee will offer free tax preparation for area residents. “If your household income was less than $41,646 through employment in 2008, you may qualify for free tax preparation service and you may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit,” the flyer for the service explains.
The EITC committee was formed as a partnership between the Chenango United Way and several other organizations to help Chenango County taxpayers by providing a free and reliable tax service. Manned by IRS trained volunteers, area residents receive free tax preparation, e-filing and direct deposit of their return at no cost.
“The earned income tax credit allows us to put money back into the pockets of those who really need it in our community… this is true community impact,” said Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco in a previous interview.
Last year, the committee was able to prepare 568 tax returns for Chenango County residents, bringing more than $354,000 in state and federal earned income credits and more than $553,000 in total refunds back to the area. Since the program began in 2004, the number of returns filed and the amount of money returned to the community has increased every year.
Those who attend Saturday’s event will have the opportunity to begin their tax return or to set up an appointment for a later date. Day, evening and weekend appointments are available until late March.
To file a return, individuals will need to bring photo identification for the individual and their spouse. If married, both parties must be present. Social Security cards for everyone listed on the tax return must be provided, as well as exact birth dates. All yearly wage and income statements, a copy of last year’s income tax forms and a copy of a check from their checking account should be provided to verify direct deposit information.
