Sherburne leaning toward village-run ambulance service

SHERBURNE – Sherburne’s recently-formed ambulance committee has been investigating options for creating a revenue recovery system, and according to Mayor William Acee, it’s leaning toward creating a municipal-based system.
The changes to the Sherburne ambulance service wouldn’t alter the daily operations of the system, but by creating a municipal-based system, the department would be able to charge for ambulance calls, creating a revenue recovery stream they hope would allow them to eventually hire part-time help.
The village has been discussing options for a revenue recovery system for several months, but there has been some debate about whether a municipal-based system or a not-for-profit system would be the best option. The ambulance committee was created to determine the best course of action. Made up of 11 members, including village and town board members, fire department members and residents, the committee held its second meeting Tuesday and began leaning toward the municipal-based system.
“The committee is moving toward the village-run ambulance. The next step for the committee is to try to put some numbers on a spread sheet to see what the future costs might look like,” said Acee. While the committee is leaning toward the village-based system, Acee still had some concerns with that option.
“My concern is that this will ultimately expand and create another class of employees at the village,” said Acee, who has said he supports the not-for-profit system.
Both options would allow the department to bill for ambulance service; however the municipal-based system is required to be run by the village. Therefore, Acee said, the cost of benefits would be higher than with a not-for-profit based system. Acee has said a not-for-profit service could solicit donations, apply for grants and the department would be able to “control their own destiny.”
Fire department members prefer the idea of the municipal-based system, which they said would create a change in name only. “It would create a split on paper, but the day to day operations would be unchanged,” Fire Chief Pat Lawrence said in a previous interview. With the not-for-profit system, Lawrence explained, all of the ambulance equipment would have to be transferred to the department, and there is no guarantee that either the village or the ambulance service would not walk out.
The next committee meeting will be held on Feb. 10. Acee has said there could be one more meeting after that before a recommendation is brought before the village board.
