Warm weather could cause minor flooding

CHENANGO COUNTY – The coming week will bring a wave of spring-like weather, with temperatures reaching the 40s and 50s, and Chenango County could see the potential for minor flooding in some areas.
Today through Friday, warmer than usual temperatures will cause snow to melt and create significant runoff, according to Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones. “We have the potential for minor flooding of some streams and creeks,” Jones said, “however we won’t have enough precipitation to cause a serious problem.” Jones explained that significant rainfall is generally needed to trigger a serious flooding event.
Although some rain is expected Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Jones said the rain isn’t expected to be enough to create a threat to rivers.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton has said minor flooding may occur in low lying areas or those with poor drainage in the central New York and northern Pennsylvania areas late Wednesday and early Thursday.
When asked about the potential for ice jam flooding, Jones explained that while ice jams are always an issue at this time of year, he does not expect the Chenango River to rise high enough to cause many problems. Ice jams typically occur when warm temperatures and rain cause snow to melt rapidly. Large chunks of ice from frozen rivers can create obstructions near bridges, dams and other areas.
