Cerasani leads OV to monster comeback win

SOUTH OTSELIC – On an evening when the senior basketball players were honored for their contributions to the OV program, senior David Cerasani had a game for the ages.
Cerasani led his team back from a 20-point second-half deficit, and his buzzer-beating three-pointer finished off a career-high 42-point evening. Cerasani had 25 points in the fourth quarter, 35 in the second half, and he connected on 8-for-12 from behind the three-point arc. “We just kind of shifted gears and played with more intensity and focus in the fourth quarter,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “David had probably the best half of basketball that I’ve ever seen a kid play. We kept clawing back and they missed some free throws.”
Lafayette, who beat OV 79-63 at the start of the season, took a 62-42 lead after starting the fourth on a 10-0 run. Cerasani hit six of his trifectas in the last quarter, and with 3.9 seconds left, Lafayette missed the front end of a foul shot attempt. Cerasani brought the ball up the floor, but had his shot attempt deflected out of bounds with 0.7 seconds remaining. Cerasani came off a screen from the top of the key on the ensuing play, and caught and shot the ball fading away as the buzzer sounded. “It was an off-balance shot,” Loomis said, “but it looked good all the way from where I was standing.
“They were definitely on their way to beating us again. We just didn’t play like we have to against good teams. In the second half we did a few things differently...it was as good a win as we’ve had in a long time.”
Brad Wentworth added 16 points for OV (17-3), who will likely earn a home game in the first round of the Section III, Class D playoffs.

WALTON – Greene fell back into a tie for first place in Midstate Athletic Conference play as Walton evened the score from an early-season loss to the Trojans.
Chad Gardepe and Steve Kaminsky combined for 33 points, a 28-point increase over the initial meeting. Gardepe and Kaminsky had six apiece in the third quarter as the Warriors gained control of the game.
“They shot the ball better than the first time we played them,” said Greene coach Jef Paske. “I guess it’s a good thing to have our off night now and get it out of our system. Give Walton credit, they were well prepared for us.”
Dan Carlin had 13 points and Dustin Turner 11 to lead Greene (12-6).

HANCOCK – Oxford stretched its winning streak to 12 games with its most lopsided game to date.
Knotted at 8-8 early in the game, Cory Seiler broke away for some easy baskets off Hancock turnovers, and the Blackhawks finished the opening stanza on a 13-3 run.
Senior Alex Champlin’s scoring picked up as well. Champlin had 15 points at halftime, and tacked on 20 more in the second half to score a career-high 35 points. “We were flat at the start and a step slow, but we switched defenses, and that seemed to get us going,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis.

“We had our chances at the end,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We had the ball under our basket with seven seconds left. We ran a play and turned it over.”
Jimmy Jachim scored 14 points for UV, and Dakota Davis posted his first double-double netting 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
