Madison County police officer arrested in Sherburne assault

SHERBURNE – A Sherburne resident who is a part-time police officer for the Hamilton Police Department and a full-time Colgate University safety officer was arrested Tuesday for allegedly beating a minor under the age of 17.
Anthony (Tony) E. Lawrence, 27, was charged with two misdemeanors – third degree assault and endangering the welfare of a minor – after State Troopers responded to a complaint involving the abuse of a young child.
Sgt. Elizabeth R. Wonka said police were not releasing the age of the victim to protect his identity, but said he was “much younger than 17.” She said the victim was a resident of the Sherburne area and that the alleged attack took place during a domestic dispute.
Wonka said the child was thrown and struck by Lawrence, causing cuts and bruises to the victim’s face.
Wonka confirmed that Lawrence was a recent municipal police academy graduate and worked part-time for the Hamilton police force and Colgate campus security.
“Following this individual’s arrest, we took the necessary steps in notifying the law enforcement agencies employing Mr. Lawrence so they may take whatever steps they deem appropriate in ensuring public safety,” said Wonka.
The Hamilton PD and Colgate security office could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
According to the university’s public website, Lawrence is on the “Campus Safety Department’s Bike Patrol Unit.”
The site says he graduated from Sherburne-Earville High School in 2000 and then served in the United States Air Force Security Forces until 2005.
