Middle school educators head to national conference
NORWICH – Eleven teachers and administrators from Norwich Middle School will get the chance to learn from some of the top names in their field next month. The group, members of the school’s Comprehensive Education Planning (CEP) Leadership Team, will be attending the annual conference of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) from March 13 to 16 in Orlando, Florida.
The event, Learning Without Boundaries, will give the local educators the opportunity to hear several highly respected speakers including Greg Mortenson.
Mortenson is the founder of the Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace, non-profit organizations which build schools and promote community-based education in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has co-authored a book, Three Cups of Tea, about his experience.
Also slated to speak at the conference are NASA Astronaut Eileen Collins as well as nationally recognized educational experts Robert Marzano and Carol Ann Tomlinson.
“I am excited for these people,” said Iraina Gerchman, Director of Instruction and Staff Development at Norwich. “I think they are going to come back with a wealth of information for us.”
Attending the conference will be an opportunity for these educators to see what is cutting edge in education as well as what is going on in other districts around the country, she explained.
According to Gerchman, the trip is being funded entirely by a grant from the State Education Department, at no cost to the Norwich City School District. The grant makes use of school improvement money made available to schools in accountability status, which is earmarked primarily for professional development.
Since the district recently learned they are no longer on the School In Need of Improvement list, this funding source will not be available in the future.
“I am very pleased that the District was awarded the grant. We have clearly demonstrated that we’ve got great people and strong programs in place. The growing success is undeniable,” said Nowich Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan. “The Middle School has moved student achievement to much higher levels and the entire district is taking steps in the right direction.”
