Big second half lifts Greene to sectional playoff win

Greene 76, Candor 47
GREENE – Candor gave Greene trouble for one half, then the Trojans unleashed their full offensive arsenal.
The Trojans scored 50 points in the second half, and blew out the Indians in what appeared like a game headed toward a fantastic finish.
Coming off a game the previous weekend where they played their worst third quarter – and led to a loss to Harpursville – the Trojans easily played their best third quarter in a 20-1 campaign. It was especially impressive considering it was a sectional playoff win over a team with a winning record. “I felt that we were too good of a team to continue to miss the shots we were missing in the first half,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “By the same token, I never thought we would shoot as well as a we did in the third quarter.”
After giving up the initial hoop of the third stanza to fall behind 28-26, the Trojans embarked on a 25-4 run. Barb Borst scored 14 during the quarter including a pair of three-pointers, while Megan McDermott had nine in the stanza. Most of McDermott’s points came off the offensive glass, and she finished with six offensive rebounds for the game.
McDermott and Borst finished with 23 points apiece for Greene, who advance to the Class C semifinals Tuesday night at home against Harpursville. Liz Wentlent controlled the Trojans’ offense as its point guard, and nearly had a triple-double winding up with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. “Lizzy can score a lot of points if she wanted to, but the only points she cares about are Greene’s,” Gorton said. “She sees the floor and did a nice job getting the ball to the open man.”

Odessa-Montour 62, Bainbridge-Guilford 58
ODESSA – A big-time performance for B-G senior Dani Conway was not enough for the Bobcats to upset number two-seeded Odessa-Montour in Class C sectional play Friday night.
The Indians, down 51-48 early in the fourth quarter, ran off 10 straight points to lead 58-51 with under two minutes to play. Four O-M players scored during the spurt with four points coming from Michelle Melansen.
Conway, scored a game-high 33 points and hit two three-pointers late in the game to keep the Bobcats in striking range. She winds up her varsity career with 1,511 points, among the top five in Chenango County history. Chelsi Rosa added eight points for B-G (15-7).
“Odessa is very good, and I really thought we had a chance to win,” said B-G coach Bob Conway. “We were up 11 with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, then some bad things started to happen. “I think we got a little overwhelmed.”

Clinton 40, Sherburne-Earlville 35
CLINTON – Clinton’s Allie Donavan hit her team’s only three-pointer of the game with 1:40 remaining. That put her team in front for good in the fourth quarter in a five-point win over Sherburne-Earlville (17-5) Friday night.
Donavan’s bucket was the last field goal for her team, although, the lead was extended by 8-for-10 foul shooting in the final minute.
“If you told me we’d hold them to just 40 points, I thought we would have to come out on top,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We knew we couldn’t match up with their size, so we worked on our zone all week and did a great job defensively. It was hard for us on the boards, but we did the best we could.”
Clinton boasted three six-footers on its roster, and that did not include leading scorer Lauren Conway. Conway had just one point in the contest. “Their size definitely made it harder for us to get looks on offense,” Mulligan said. “We had more shots blocked than normal, and unfortunately, the shots we have been hitting from outside were not falling.”
Brenda Hoefler led S-E with 10 points to go with five rebounds and four steals. Bridget Irwin added nine points, and Caitlynn Adams had a team-high eight boards while pocketing four steals. “I’m really proud of the way we played this season,” Mulligan said. “Being in this type of atmosphere and gaining some experience, we want to go a little further next season.”
