City looks at third round of funding from Restore NY grant

NORWICH – After receiving $300,000 last year as part of the Restore New York grant program, the city is looking at a third round of funding and hoping they’ll be able to secure money for additional projects.
Last week, City Community Development Specialist Todd Dreyer told the Finance / Personnel Committee that a third round of grant funding is available as part of the Restore New York program. A public hearing on the grant will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 at city court.
“We’re looking at possible projects to include in the application now,” Dreyer told the committee. Originally, he said, properties like the Unguentine building and the former Morrisville Campus were on the list; however, both of those properties were excluded from this round’s application for one reason or another. Currently, Dreyer explained, the city is looking at two smaller retail structures that could benefit from the grant.
Dreyer said he is expecting the city to receive around $200,000 if successful and to put in an additional $60,000 to $100,000. Throughout New York State approximately $150 million in Restore New York Funds are available. According to Dreyer, the regional director of Empire State Development was in town on Tuesday and agreed that the city’s proposed project is a nice one.
In January, the city received $300,000 in Restore New York funds to demolish three dilapidated homes in Norwich and replace them with new construction. The demolition was completed last fall. New construction is expected to begin this building season.
