EITC committee holds final Super Saturday event
CHENANGO COUNTY – If you’re one of the many people who is waiting until the last minute to file your income tax return, you may be in luck. This Saturday, the Earned Income Tax Credit Partnership Committee will hold its second and final Super Saturday event, offering free tax preparation to qualifying members of the community.
“Because of the financial situation, there are a lot of people who are holding off on getting their taxes done,” said Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco. For those people who are waiting, Monaco said there is still time to get free tax preparation.
The EITC committee offers free tax preparation to families with a total earned income of $42,000 or less, depending on their number of dependents. “Our goal is to see as many people as we can who are eligible to receive free tax preparation before the April 15 deadline,” Monaco said. While Saturday’s event will be the last big push toward accomplishing that goal, other day, evening and weekend appointments can be scheduled as needed through the first week of April.
This year, the Chenango and Madison County EITC committees have collaborated to offer a more expansive service to the two-county area. “To date, in the two counties, we have completed 773 tax returns. So far we’ve brought a total of $522,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits back to the community, and $232,000 in child tax credits,” Monaco said. “The average refund is $11,373.”
The Super Saturday event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Manpower and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Anyone interested in receiving free tax preparation must call Manpower at 336-7311 to make an appointment. If Manpower has no more openings, interested parties can call Opportunities for Chenango at 336-2101.
Participants and their spouse must be present to file and should bring photo identification for both parties, social security cards for everyone listed on the tax return, exact birth dates for all listed, all yearly wage and income statements and W2s, a copy of last year’s income tax forms if possible and a copy of a check from their checking account to verify direct deposit information. Returns are filed electronically, and most refunds are available in two weeks.
