OTEGO – Unatego’s pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in a shutout victory over Oxford Tuesday.
Jake Earl hit a pinch-hit double in his team’s final at-bat for the only run needed in the game. Chet Davis added an RBI single during the three-run sixth.
“Both teams got good, solid pitching tonight, and I think the hitting for both teams is behind the pitching at this point,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer.
Unatego starter Tyler Newman struck out 10 in five scoreless innings, while Oxford starter P.J. Hubman logged five scoreless innings giving up just one hit. “We didn’t have a hard-hit ball all game, and we just weren’t able to get a timely hit in the game,” Palmer said.
Oxford is at Delhi today.

OTEGO – Jackie Heggie’s sharply-struck single on the first pitch of the game portended good things to come for Oxford.
The Blackhawks won on opening day for the first time in nearly a decade in a non-division game at Unatego Tuesday.
Marlena Frank went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Jenna Farwell drove in two runs, and Ashlee Farwell added three hits and one ribbie. Farwell also twirled a complete-game victory striking out six and allowing just three Unatego hits.
“It’s a great start for us,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows, whose team went 5-7 in division play last season. “We were aggressive at the plate and confident in the field.”

HANCOCK – Hancock scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to prevail over Greene Tuesday.
Ariel Kravetsky singled in Leanna Walker with a long single in the Wildcats’ final at-bat for the game winner. Kravetsky also drove in Walker in the second inning to give their team an early lead.
Greene tied the game in the fourth when Stephanie Stahl’s single plated Alyssa David.
Greene was poised to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Haley MacLaren singled and stole second. Erin Smith then singled to center, but MacLaren was thrown out at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run. “It was a close play, and their girl just made a great throw,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We’re going to play that way (aggressively) this season, and it almost worked.”
Freshman Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 14 and walked one in her first varsity start for Greene. Hanrahan was called into duty when incumbent starter Megan McDermott was injured last weekend. “I wasn’t sure about Rebecca coming into the game, but she proved she is ready to pitch on the varsity level,” Smith said.
