Area youth enjoy enrichment opportunities at BOCES
NORWICH – Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego (DCMO) BOCES Enrichment Services has collaborated with a number of leading individuals and organizations in our communities to bring area youth exciting enrichment opportunities. Opportunities available to school districts are designed to reach a vast array of students’ interests and to encourage creative thought and decision making.
This fall, DCMO BOCES successfully hosted their annual mentor program, “It’s a Guy Thing,” which is designed for 5th and 6th grade boys. A similar event, “Women Helping Girls Make Choices,” is set to take place on May 2 at SUNY Oneonta. This program is designed for 5th and 6th grade girls. These one-day events are made possible through collaboration with the Catskill Regional Teacher Center and SUNY Oneonta. These events would not be possible without the leaders in our communities who volunteer and act as mentors for the day.
Other events coordinated by DCMO BOCES include the Region 13 Odyssey of the Mind competition, a local Forensic Speech and Debate tournament, The Daily Star Regional Spelling Bee, and the Scholar Recognition Banquet.
Odyssey of the Mind took place on Feb. 21 with 56 schools participating from the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory regions. Odyssey of the Mind is an annual international competition that is dedicated to creative problem solving and student teamwork. The local Forensic Speech and Debate tournament was held on Feb. 28 at the Unatego Central School. Eleven school districts competed in events including humorous interpretation, dramatic interpretation, original oratory, and the Lincoln-Douglass debate.
The Daily Star Regional Bee determined our area’s winner on March 7. Twenty six students from the DCMO and ONC BOCES regions competed for the title. Lea Davis, an eighth grader from the Oxford Academy and Central School, was named the winner and will now be practicing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. May 26-28. All-expenses for this trip will be paid for by the Regional Spelling Bee’s sponsor, The Daily Star.
The final event of the 2008-2009 school year coordinated through DCMO BOCES is the 6th annual Scholar Recognition Banquet. The banquet is made possible through collaboration with the Otsego County Chamber, Commerce Chenango, The Daily Star, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Morrisville, Utica School of Commerce, and public and private school districts in the ONC BOCES and DCMO BOCES regions. The program honors outstanding scholastic achievement by a member of each graduating class of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the ONC and DCMO BOCES supervisory areas. In addition, the program honors teachers nominated by each student scholar for having had a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education.
Each one of these programs could not take place without the support and generosity of our area colleges and universities, as well as numerous businesses and community based organizations. With their help, DCMO BOCES is able to bring unique enrichment opportunities to hundreds of students throughout our region.
