GREENE – Greene survived Harpursville’s late rally, and scored the game-winning tally in its last at-bat to even the Trojans’ log at 1-1.
Scott Gorton led off the last of the seventh with a double, moved to third on a balk, and scored on Nate Whittaker’s game-winning single.
Harpursville tied the game with three runs in the seventh, two of those coming in on passed balls. “The good thing was after giving up the runs, we didn’t give up and were able to battle to get the win,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We had a couple of mistakes that hurt us, but overall, we’re playing much better defense this season.”
Scott Gorton and Whittaker had two hits apiece, and Whittaker finished with two RBI.
Brendan Kinne pitched one-third of an inning of relief to earn the victory.

HAMILTON – S-E busted the game open scoring five runs in the fifth to defeat local rival Hamilton Thursday.
Jake Sampson’s base-clearing double capped the five-run frame making it 6-0. Mike McCredy hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Randy Wilcox smacked a solo round-tripper in the seventh.
“We have nine or 10 guys that can hit, and the guys coming off the bench played well today,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks.
McCredy, Mike Doscher, and Stephen Buddenhagen led S-E with two hits each.

DELHI –Luke Burns reached base safely four times for Delhi finishing with three runs scored, a triple, and a solo homer in Delhi’s one-run win over the Blackhawks.
Sean Kline hit a two-run double in the fourth for Delhi that brought the game back to even, and a four-run fifth gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.
“We played hard and kept battling, we just made a few too many mistakes,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “We did a nice job staying in the game, but it’s hard to win with eight errors.”
Kyle Ferrington had three hits for Oxford, and Eddie Grundner added two hits and three RBI to the Blackhawks’ ledger.

DELHI – Oxford won on opening day earlier this week for the first time in eight seasons, and freshman Jackie Heggie tossed a no-hitter in her first career varsity start Thursday at Delhi as the Blackhawks improved to 2-0.
“This (the start) isn’t a surprise to me, but it probably is to everyone else in the league,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “I’ve been with these girls since elementary school.”
Heggie also went 4-for-5 with four RBI, Jenna Farwell added three hits and three RBI for Oxford, who banged out 25 hits and had two innings in which it scored 10 or more runs. Malorey Muzzy, Allie Nelson, Alyshia Crawford, and Misty Golden all chipped in with three hits apiece.

HARPURSVILLE – Greene dropped its second straight 2-1 final this season Thursday at Harpursville.
Winning pitcher Stephanie Gaska drove in the winning run in the eighth inning, and she finished with 14 strikeouts. “Gaska kept us off stride with off-speed stuff, and she challenged us with her fastball late in the game,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “She’s tough.”
Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 15 for Greene (0-2) and has 29 strikeouts in two tough-luck losses. “We’ve been getting people on base, we’re just not getting that extra hit we need to score runs,” Smith said.
Erin Smith scored Greene’s lone run on Hanrahan’s RBI single in the sixth.

EDMESTON – In a non-league battle against an old Tri-Valley League rival, UV won for the first time this season behind the hitting of Brooke Maynard and Leslie Barnes.
The Storm duo each and 3-for-4 days at the plate. Maynard drove in two runs, and both UV ladies had three runs scored. Hannah Benson drove in two with a double in the fifth inning and added three RBI.
“It was a big turnaround for us in two days,” said UV coach Brandi Backus.

NEW BERLIN – Despite keeping a couple key runners on the sideline, including Section IV champion Dustin Ross, B-G/Afton’s track team was able to sweep the boys and girls titles Thursday at Unadilla Valley.
Tyler Foulds was the double winner for the host Storm taking the shot put and discus.
B-G/A’s girls won all but three events led by Section IV state qualifier Melissa Reigles, who took the discus and shot put.
“We approached this more as a practice and I think B-G/A and Harpursville did the same,” said UV coach Bill Holdrege. “We were able to establish some times and give some of our kids confidence.”
UV competes at Sidney on Wednesday.
