Many new faces on Sun all-star teams
Greene’s girls became the third Chenango County team to reach the state semifinals over the last decade, and the Trojans’ season ended on the first day of spring. The Trojans’ lengthy season, one that extended 3 1/2 months, pushed our year-end compilation of all-star basketball players into the first week of April.
Twenty-one total girls and boys land on our sports pages today as 2008-2009 Evening Sun All-Stars. Nominations were accepted by head coaches from the area or named to the squad by our sports staff based on season-long excellence, along with recognition from their respective leagues.
The majority of our boys’ all-stars are new to the squad with Oxford’s Alex Champlin, who won the area scoring title; Otselic Valley’s David Cerasani, and Norwich’s Vaughn Labor the lone holdovers from the 2007-2008 all-star grouping.
Named to the team for the first time were Greene’s Dan Carlin and Scott Gorton; G-MU’s Cody Hall; Norwich’s Corey Dietrich and Timmy Clark; Oxford’s Cory Seiler and Tom Gould; and Sherburne-Earlville’s Caleb Brown.
The girls’ all-star team is dotted with many familiar faces to this page including four-time all-star Dani Conway of Bainbridge-Guilford. Conway won her third straight local scoring title and finished with 1,514 career points. Other returning all-stars are Barb Borst and Megan McDermott of Greene, and Hannah Johnson of Unadilla Valley.
