Two fires in twelve hours keep crews busy

NORWICH – In less than a 12-hour period Thursday, fire crews responded to a home fire in the City of Norwich and a barn fire in the Town of Preston.
At 12:46 p.m., the Norwich Fire Department responded to a house fire at 22 Hill View Dr. after several neighbors called 911 to report they could see flames and smoke pouring out from the two-story home and connecting garage.
The Oxford Fire Department was also called for mutual aid and remained on standby during the fire.
Neighbors John and Sharon Provo called 911 after they heard an explosion. “Actually we were just at home and heard a loud boom. My wife looked up and saw the place was on fire. She called 911, and I went over to see if Mrs. Rabinowitz was home,” said John.
“They said they heard some kind of an explosion. We believe it was the power line coming off the house,” explained Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo.
The home, owned by Harriet Rabinowitz, was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
“The cause is still under investigation, but we believe it may have been electrical,” said Chawgo.
“The guys did an excellent job. They got in there and kept the damage to a minimum. It should be repairable, especially when you consider that when they got there, flames were coming out of the window,” said Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith.
Chawgo said that the home suffered some fire damage limited to one or two rooms and sustained smoke and heat damage throughout the house.
The Chenango County Bureau of Fire and Norwich Police Department were also on hand to assist fire crews
Just under 12 hours after being called to the first blaze, at around midnight, the Norwich and Oxford Fire departments, along with Brisben and Preston departments, were again called out to a barn fire at 1050 County Route 18 in the Town of Preston.
Beckwith reported that the barn was in very good condition and that the owner, Veterinarian Dr. Warren Liddell and his wife, Anne, lost a horse and a tractor to the fire.
“The barn was not used for the owner’s livelihood, but was in great condition and was used regularly,” he said.
Crews used a nearby pond to lay 5 inch diameter hose, but were unable to save the structure which was fully involved by the time they arrived. The fire departments contained the fire. Several other out buildings near the barn were unaffected,” said Beckwith.
