Arcuri stops in Norwich on whirlwind upstate tour
NORWICH – At a press conference held yesterday morning at the Norwich Wastewater Treatment Plant, Congressman Michael Arcuri announced that he had secured $500,000 in Congressional funding for improvements to the facility on behalf of the City of Norwich.
The stop, which also included a listening session with constituents at the Norwich Fire Department later in the day, was part of a tour the congressman is making of the 11 counties which comprise the 24th Congressional district.
“It’s an honor to work with someone who works so hard for us in Washington,” said City of Norwich Mayor Joe Maiurano, who was on hand to receive the ceremonial check.
Arcuri credited the mayor and his staff for keeping in constant contact with his office regarding the project. The funding the congressman has secured for upgrades at the Water Treatment Plant was included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which was signed by President Barack Obama at the end of March.
The federal funds will help offset the $4.5 million project, which will replace the plant’s 18 rotating biological contactors (RBCs). The RBCs currently installed at the facility have been in place for more than 20 years. In their present state, they require extensive maintenance to sustain adequate treatment and to comply with state environmental conservation regulations. The Wastewater Treatment Plant serves not only the city, but portions of the Town of Norwich as well, including commercial districts and outlying areas.
Construction, scheduled to begin this summer, is expected to take roughly 12 months to complete.
At noon, Arcuri met face-to-face with local residents at the Norwich Fire Department. For approximately an hour and a half the congressman shared information about congressional activities which could impact the area and listened as constituents shared concerns on everything from industrial hemp, healthcare, energy costs, agriculture, immigration and Afghanistan.
Arcuri also weighed in on the topics of campaign financing and term limites, and touched upon the potential impacts of investments in high speed rail on upstate New York and the recent victory over NYRI.
