Catholic Charities holds sixth annual Celebration of Women

NORWICH – On Thursday night, Catholic Charities of Chenango County will hold their sixth annual Celebration of Women from 6 to 8 p.m. at Howard Johnson’s in Norwich.
Featuring musical entertainment, demonstrations, speakers and information from local businesses and organizations, the event is hoped to show women what is available to them. “[The celebration] is about showing women little bits of what they could be a part of,” said Catholic Charities Senior Advocate Maggie O’Connor. “You can make it on your own.”
Business and organizations featured at the event were carefully chosen by the staff of CC Crime Victim’s Program, O’Connor explained. “The goal was to create and ensure the finest sampling of women-centered service providers and services available in the Chenango County Community,” a program for the event reads.
When the event first began in 2004, O’Connor said about 30 people attended. “It’s been growing ever since,” she said. Last year, the event drew in between 150 to 200. In addition, the number of service providers at the event has grown. “We have more guest speakers, music and demonstrations, too,” said Rape Crisis Coordinator and Community Educator Beth Neuland.
This year’s guest speakers will include New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault Executive Director Jane McEwen, Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Garry, Catholic Charities Parenting Skills Educator Anne Brightsen and Transformational Life Coach Renee Guidelli.
Raffles, prizes and food will all be provided. “The two hours goes by fast. There is a lot going on, and women can leave knowing what types of career opportunities are out there.” Since most of the organizations at the event are represented by women, Neuland said the event gives women the opportunity to see others in high positions in those agencies. “It’s empowering to see,” she said.
Organizations at the event will provide information on health care, fitness, education, local businesses, self help and there will be on-site hair styling, manicures and massage. “For a small community, there is a lot available,” Neuland said.
The Celebration of Women is held annually in April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness month. Neuland explained that women are the highest victim population in Chenango County. In addition to the other services provided at the event, it also serves to educate women and the community about sexual assault and the services available to those who are victims. “One in every six women is sexually assaulted,” O’Connor said. She explained that for those who are not victims, the information provided may help them refer others to the services available.
