Norwich readies for After-Prom Party

NORWICH – Fundraising is actively underway for the 8th Annual Norwich High School After Prom Party that is scheduled to take place from midnight to 5 a.m. May 31 at the Norwich Family YMCA.
Students have been meeting regularly to organize the many events and activities planned. The entertainment will be comprised of a disk jockey, caricature artist, hypnotist, games, other events and door prizes. Snack foods and drinks will also be provided.
Students attending the event will have the opportunity to win a $1,000 grand prize and other cash certificates for clothing, gifts and meals.
“This tradition has been a great success in the past, averaging 80-90 percent of the students attending. We are hoping to achieve 100 percent participation this year,” said Mary Lou Eddy of Norwich, a parent and co-founder of the event.
The students particulary enjoy the stage hypnosis performed by certified hypnotist and motivational counselor, Robert D. Shelly, Eddy said.
The After Prom Party was begun by a group of concerned parents, and students after three Norwich HIgh School students and best friends were killed by a drunk driver. It was a way to provide a safe and substance free event, one that the juniors and seniors now look forward to each year. Students who have previously attended have said that it has provided a memorable evening that they will never forget.
“The After Prom part is a good way to prevent drugs, alcohol and accidents from happening, and it sounds like fun which is why I am helping to organize the event,” said Nate Biviano, a junior.
The tradition has been made possible by the work of the parents’ and students’ fundraising efforts and the many contributions from the community businesses, organizations and citizens. Door prizes and all donations, which are tax deductible, may be made to: Norwich High School Students Against Drunk Driving Chapter – After Prom Party; Attn: Kelly Collins-Colosi, Advisor; Midland Drive, Norwich, NY 13815.
“With the economy the way it is, it might be hard for people to justify helping out with something like this, but we want people to realize how important this event is for the students.
“We also urge people to contribute to their respective high school’s after prom parties, as these events are truly important in providing a safe and fun memory for the students,” said Eddy.
