Police: Canadian pilot flew ultralight plane
EATON, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of a Canadian aircraft company was returning from marketing his new lightweight sport plane in Florida when he crashed and died in rural upstate New York, police said Wednesday.
Bernard Laferriere, 56, of St. Gerard-Des-Laurentides, Quebec, left the airport in Norwich in Chenango County on Monday afternoon after waiting for gusty winds to subside, state police said. A landowner on an all-terrain vehicle found Larerriere’s demolished plane Tuesday afternoon in woods in neighboring Madison County, about 30 miles southeast of Syracuse.
Laferriere was president of Explorer Aeronautique in Quebec. He was flying home in his company’s new Ecoflyer after displaying it at the weeklong Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla.
In a YouTube video, Laferriere describes the $100,000 Ecoflyer as a two-seat ultralight aircraft with an empty weight of 750 pounds. The company has sold several of the planes as kits and planned to have factory-built ones ready by late summer 2009.
The Ecoflyer is marketed as a flying camper, with front seats that reverse to face a living space large enough for a small table and chairs. There’s a two-person bed in the tail section. The plane, constructed almost entirely of composite materials, has a pudgy shape to provide a roomy interior.
Federal Aviation Agency officials are still investigating the cause of the crash.
