Weekly bike, car and truck night begins Saturday
NORWICH – Starting Saturday night, The Norwich Elks Lodge Community Activities Committee will hold their first Saturday night cruise-in event in East Park in downtown Norwich.
Elks Lodge member Paul Utter explained that drivers of bikes, cars and trucks are invited to come to the event, which will begin at 5 p.m. every Saturday, starting May 2.
“A lot of other cities in the area do similar events, and we thought, there’s really no outlet for local people,” Utter explained. Fellow Elks Club member Rick Stark explained that he attended other area events, like the Wednesday bike night in Sherburne. “I just wondered, why can’t we do that in Norwich?” Stark said. The two explained that they don’t want to compete with the other area events, but to work cooperatively with them. That’s why they chose to hold the event on Saturday nights.
Each week, the event will feature a DJ or live band in the pagoda in East Park. Although the events will be dependent on the weather, Stark said if it rains on a night when a band is scheduled to play, the entertainment will be moved to the Elks Lodge. The entertainment will be different from one week to the next. “We want to do different things, so it isn’t the same every Saturday,” Stark said.
When asked how many people they hope to draw in, Utter said, “ultimately we’d like to see as many as the town can hold.” To accommodate the crowd, Utter and Stark have spoken with area businesses in hopes of getting them to stay open late for the weekly events. “Garf’s has agreed to stay open, and we’re talking with other restaurants and business and encouraging them to stay open later.” Utter said.
While the focus of the events will primarily be to look at different vehicles and interact with the community, weekly raffles and prizes will also be available. Area businesses have already donated some prizes, including an oil change, an ice cream cake from Garf’s and gift certificates from New Body Works. In addition a 50/50 raffle will be held every week and T-shirts will be available. Other vendors may also be on hand, depending on the crowd turnout.
For the first week of the event, the featured DJ will be Porta-Party. Utter said the DJ plays a little bit of everything. The Elks Club is still looking for bands to perform on a volunteer basis at the summer events. Anyone interested can contact Utter at p_utter@yahoo.com or Stark at starky491956@yahoo.com.
