Only half a loaf
If you watch one of the big networks for most of your news you are getting only half a loaf. Many studies have documented this.
Perhaps you are happy with half a loaf. Perhaps you do not realize how little of the loaf you are being served. I know that is true, from many friends. When I mention something that has not been offered by their network news, they wonder if I landed from Saturn. “Never heard that before,” is a comment I hear a lot.
The Media Research Center recently explained why you may have “never heard that before”. It looked at the nightly news for the first 100 days of President Obama’s administration.
In those 100 days, ABC’s “World News,” “NBC Nightly News” and “CBS Evening News” ran 852 stories about the new administration. Consider how much coverage that is.
Now you should know by now these networks are in love with President Obama. You should know by now they have skewed their coverage of news to the left for years. However, you might think that if they churned out 852 stories about the new team in Washington in 100 days they might have at least glanced in the other direction.
After all, 46 percent of voters did vote for the other candidate. You might think the networks would occasionally look at the side of the coin those 60 million voters might be wondering about.
You might think such things. But you won’t see them. Not on the big three news programs.
This administration has boldly moved us toward socialism. No question. The government owns a big chunk of General Motors. And major banks. And a major insurance company. It is ready to inject government into a huge portion of healthcare. This is a gigantic push toward socialism.
Not to the networks. According to Media Research Center “None of the three broadcast networks aired a single story on whether the new president’s economic policies were driving America toward European-style socialism. Not a single network news reporter used the term “socialist” to describe how his policies are shifting economic authority to the federal government.
“On only four occasions was the word “socialist” used on camera at all - all by outside sources.”
This, in 852 stories! During perhaps the most massive shift toward socialism this nation has ever experienced.
“Network reporters never called Obama or his agenda even ‘liberal.” NBC and CBS never used the word, and ABC only aired the term twice, citing Reublicans using the word ‘liberal’ to describe White House policies.
“On three of these major economic policies - his banking bailout, his auto bailout and his plans for socialized medicine - the networks never had a single soundbite from a conservative expert. After 100 days, the media still look more like the president’s advertising team than the people’s watchdog.”
Hey, it is all right with me if the networks want to be the president’s advertising team. That is their business. Literally and figuratively. It is not turning out to be a great business model for them. Fox News (which a lot of studies finds is, indeed, closer to balance than any of the others) is gobbling up an ever larger share of viewers. The big three, their offspring and CNN are left to divide a shrinking share.
They are shooting themselves in the foot for the sake of their political bias. So be it.
The question I raise is whether you realize or sense you get only half a loaf when you watch only big three network news. On things economic, climate issues, war coverage, you get a full serving of one side of the issues. And sometimes not even a few crumbs from the other side.
You have to decide what satisfies your appetite.
