Scholarship winners featured at Monday Evening Musical Club
NORWICH – The Monday Evening Musical Club of Norwich presents the 2009 Scholarship Winners and Advanced Student’s Recital on Monday, May 18 at the United Church of Christ, 11 West Main St. at 7:30 p.m.
Two outstanding musicians, Celsey Pittsley and Constantino (Tino) Oliviero of Norwich are this year’s scholarship recipients.
The daughter of Nora and Carl Pittsley of Norwich, Celsey plays many instruments including tuba, trumpet, baritone, trombone, alto sax and piano. She has participated in all aspects of the band and choral programs at Norwich High School. A devoted singer, she has been a member of the Norwich High School Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, and the select Madrigal Singers. She is also President of the Mixed Choir. Celsey attends the Canasawacta Valley Free Methodist Church and is the head sound technician during the services.
Also receiving a scholarship is Constantino A. Oliviero, son of Mrs. Ruth Oliviero. Tino’s primary instrument is percussion and secondary instrument is piano/mallets. He has received numerous awards for music performance and academics throughout high school including the Band Director’s Award, VIP Awards, Honor Roll, and Scholar of the Year. He has scored outstanding marks at the NYSSMA music festival for several years and has participated in Concert, Symphonic, Marching and Jazz Bands throughout high school. Both will attend Onondaga Community College in the fall pursuing a degree in Music Education.
In addition to the two scholarship winners, the Monday Evening Musical Club will honor two special seniors who have performed in the advanced student recital since grade school. Pianists Jonathon Cox from Greene and Ellie Sacks from Norwich will pursue careers in the sciences,but have each demonstrated tremendous musical devotion and talent throughout their secondary education.
Also featured in the recital will be pianists Jason Handy of Norwich, Ian Farrell of Sidney Center, Mick Khoury of Sherburne and Hayley Chwazik-Gee of Norwich. Several singers including Breanna Guiffre and Courtney Becker of Norwich will perform. Teachers of the advanced students are Gail Cooney, Anita Humer, Meena Conant and Karen Stoddard.
