First Edition holds signing Saturday
NORWICH – Local author Ginnah Howard will be signing copies of her novel “Night Navigation” at the First Edition Bookstore in Norwich on Saturday.
Howard, a Gilbertsville native, worked as a teacher for nearly 30 years in the New Berlin School District before beginning her writing career. In the late 1980s, she began writing, and upon retiring, she was able to dedicate more time to the craft.
“Night Navigation” is Howard’s first book to be published. The novel tells the story of a family dealing with mental illness, drug addiction and the ups and downs of their journey along the road to recovery.
Howard explained she chose to write about this subject matter because of personal experience and because it was a subject so many people could relate to. “Like most writers of fiction, we begin with something from our own experience and from there it becomes fiction,” Howard said.
The story follows Del Merrick and her son Mark. Del is a drug addict who is working his way through rehab. The book moves back and forth from the perspective of mother and son as each struggle to deal with their life challenges.
Howard explained she originally planned to write a trilogy about the Merricks and another family in the novel, the Morlettis. “Night Navigation” was intended to be the second book in the series, but the first and third are works in progress.
Howard explained that she didn’t begin writing until she was in her late 40s. In September, she will be 70. In the beginning she started to write because New York State encouraged English teachers to do so. “How could you teach writing if you couldn’t write,” Howard said. It was then that she began creative writing and she became serious about it.
On Saturday, Howard will be signing copies of “Night Navigation” beginning at 11 a.m. At 11:30, she plans to read an excerpt from the book.
