GEORGETOWN – Just two miles from the Chenango County line, a tornado touched down in Georgetown in Madison County Saturday evening, causing damage to some residences and injuring one person.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, a tornado hit in Georgetown, bringing winds of 120 miles per hour. On Sunday, the National Weather Service confirmed the damage was indeed caused by a tornado. The tornado was ranked an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The scale gauges damage and severity of a storm system. According to the scale, an EF-2 tornado brings winds of 111 to 135 miles per hour and causes “considerable damage.”

According to Madison County Fire Coordinator Joe DeFrancisco, the tornado traveled along a six-mile path in the town, leaving a trail approximately 150 feet wide.

“It blasted through that one section and apparently no other,” DeFrancisco said. The fire coordinator confirmed that two properties were damaged as a result of the storm. According to the NWS in Binghamton, most of the damage along the path was to trees, however the system also struck three structures.
