NORWICH – Norwich finished off its week with back-to-back wins, and freshman pitcher Mackay Hotaling threw hits first career shutout on Friday.
Hotaling fanned nine, did not walk a batter, and surrendered just two hits to Whitney Point. “It was a great defensive game, and we had excellent pitching from Mackay,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “He really had his curveball working today.”
Hotaling and Brock Kossman also led Norwich’s hitting with two hits apiece. Kossman added a single RBI and a run scored in the victory.
Norwich (5-9) plays at Sidney today.

Sherburne-Earlville 8, Cooperstown 4
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville clinched a tie for the Center State Conference division title winning its tenth straight game Friday, while also completing a season sweep of 2008 division champion Cooperstown.
Trailing by one run early, S-E put together a five-run third inning to take the lead – all the runs coming in with two outs.
Mike Doscher went 4-for-4 to lead S-E (8-0, 13-3), and his RBI single tied the game at 1-1. Steve Buddenhagen singled to right for the go-ahead run, and Jake Sampson along with Mike McCredy followed with RBI doubles. Joe Moses completed the uprising with an RBI single. Doscher also scored three runs. Sampson finished with two hits and two RBI to support winning pitcher Caleb Brown.
Brown won his seventh game this season striking out nine and walking one. “We just started stroking the ball (in the third),” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “Doscher is our sparkplug. Once he gets on base, good things start to happen.”
S-E plays at Mount Markham today.

HANCOCK – Hancock remained unbeaten at home, and set the stage for back-to-back losses for Oxford, who dropped a three-run final to Harpursville Saturday.
The Blackhawks needed to win at least one of its final two games to set up at least a tie for the MAC Division II title.
“We had a lot of errors early in the game and gave them too many baserunners,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer of the Hancock defeat.
Kyle Houshultz homered and drove in five runs for Hancock, who took the lead with four runs in the second inning.
Tom Gould had two hits and an RBI for Oxford in the loss.
Harpursville strung together five hits in the opening inning to score four runs, and all of the scoring by both teams was done in the first three innings.
“We settled down after the first couple of innings and held them,” Palmer said. “We just couldn’t put enough runs across after they took the early lead.”
Mason Dean had two hits and two runs for Harpursville.
P.J. Hubman led Oxford (6-4, 8-8) with two hits and two runs scored.

CINCINNATUS – Otselic Valley reversed a one-run loss to Cincinnatus from earlier this week in lopsided fashion Friday.
Trevor Marston drove in five runs and Jamin Selan four as the Vikings (8-4) rapped out 25 hits and scored in every inning. “We just hit the ball very well today and got up a good head of steam right from the start,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “I wish we could have gotten some of these hits earlier in the week, but that’s baseball.”
Chase Marston finished 3-for-3, and Selan went 4-for-6.
OV hosts Stockbridge Valley today.

COPES CORNERS – Tyler Wildfeir improved his pitching mark to 6-0 on the season as G-MU endured a tough test from Morris in the two clubs’ second meeting this season.
In the first matchup, the Raiders rolled to a 13-1 victory. This time, it took a two-run fourth inning to give G-MU (7-1, 12-3) its first lead of the game.
Andrew Delmar led off the fourth with a double, Corin Todd singled, and Alex Schmidt’s sacrifice fly tied the game. Jon Scofield hit an RBI single, one of his three hits on the day, for the the lead.
“It was a good, solid game and Morris played well today,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Coming off a tough game (against Edmeston), we may have lost our focus on the offensive end, but we didn’t on the defensive end.”
G-MU turned two double plays and Wildfeir issued just one walk. The Raiders’ defense was also sound committing one error.
Eric Smith was the tough-luck loser for Morris allowing just six hits. He struck out six and walked four.
The Raiders, who have won four straight and 10 of 11 games, host Worcester Tuesday.

G-MU struggled until a four-run sixth inning as Calli Hill had an RBI single. Hill and Alicia Sebeck finished with two hits on the G-MU side. “We got the bats going in the sixth inning, but we couldn’t get a rhythm most of the game,” said G-MU coach Nancy Estabrook.

HANCOCK – Hancock scored a baker’s dozen of runs in the third inning on its way to halting the Blackhawks’ two-game winning streak this week.
The Wildcats drew 11 walks in the third, and Oxford was charged with four errors. Daisha Kane added a two-run homer in the fourth for Hancock, and Maria Newman lashed a two-run triple in the fifth.
“Our biggest problem today is that we didn’t hit the strike zone,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows, whose pitching staff issued 20 total base on balls.
Julie Heggie had two hits and two RBI and Kayla Parks a two-run double for Oxford.

Maine-Endwell Rotary Invitational
ENDWELL – Oxford sophomore sprinters Katie and Emily Woodford remained unbeaten on the season, and together pushed Oxford to a seventh-place team showing at the Maine-Endwell-hosted Rotary Invitational Saturday.
Katie won the 100- and 400-meter races with little difficulty in 12.6 seconds (a season-best) and 59.1 seconds respectively.
Emily had the tougher go rallying down the stretch in the 200-meter final to literally nose out Eboulatalese Airewele of Ithaca by one-hundreth of second timing 26.40 seconds to Airewele’s 26.41 seconds.
Parkhurst Invitational
ENDICOTT – Norwich had two overall place finishes, and senior Steven Spittler ran a season-best in the 1,600 meters to move closer to an automatic state-qualifying berth.
Junior Mike Reilly had the top individual finish for the Tornado placing third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.4 seconds. Norwich’s 1,600-meter relay added a sixth timing a 3:45.
Spittler ran a career-low 4:31, one of the best 1,600-meter times in Norwich history and just four seconds off the state cut-off time of 4:27. Spittler’s time was also five seconds lower than his previous best effort this season.
Golf
Seiler rallies on back nine, but comes up one shot short
ITHACA – Oxford junior Cory Seiler was one of only five qualifiers (out of 22) at the Section IV medalist tournament Saturday at Cornell University to improve on his first-day score, but the Blackhawks linkster came up a short short of making the medalist squad.
Seiler was five shots off the first-round leader and in 15th place after shooting an 84 the first day. He lowered his score to an 82 highlighted by a 38 on the back nine for a 166 two-round aggregate to place 10th overall in the section.
“The great thing about Cory’s round was that he was able to recover after his front nine and play a strong back nine,” said Oxford coach Pete Anderson. “He improved over the past two years he qualified, and he now knows he can play the course.”
Seiler finished the regular season with a match average of plus-2.8 strokes over par to earn a spot in the spring medalist tournament.
Edmeston 221, Oxford 235
EDMESTON – Oxford was without its top player, Cory Seiler, yet still fashioned its low road score of the season Friday at Edmeston.
Sophomore Haley Witchella shot a season-low 40, Dan Dey added a 45, while Caden Izard (46) and Chris Marks (49) also had season-best scores.
Ben Conboy shot a 38 for Edmeston and Brad Jones a 39 to pace the Panthers.
Oxford finishes its season at 5-8-1.
