BID kicks off classic car weekend with Friday cruise-in

NORWICH – On Friday, the Norwich Business Improvement District will gear up for Memorial Day with its eighth annual Pre-Memorial Day Cruise-In.
Presented by the BID and sponsored by Service Pharmacy, Nina’s Pizzeria and Christman Motor Sales, the Cruise-In will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in East Park and the Frontier parking lot. Admission to the event is free.
“We invite all car and motorcycle buffs to bring their vehicles down to East Park,” said BID Director Pegi LoPresti. There is no fee to enter a vehicle in the Cruise-In and no judging will take place. “It’s just a nice way to kick off the Memorial Day car show weekend,” LoPresti said. The car show weekend will continue on Saturday and Sunday with the Rolling Antiquers Classic Car show at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
Friday night’s Cruise-In will include music by DJ Dick Talbot, lucky number giveaways and goody bags for those who participate. LoPresti said the goody bags contain coupons and trinkets from local merchants, and were put together with the help of the Norwich Pennysaver and Evening Sun. Lucky number tickets will be given out to all those in attendance, and numbers will be drawn throughout the evening for prize give aways.
“Last year, we had over 125 vehicles,” LoPresti said of the Cruise-In event. While the event depends heavily on the weather, she said more than 500 people came to East Park last year to see the cars.
LoPresti said she is grateful to all of the business and individuals who work so hard to make the event a success every year, including the Norwich City Police Department and Police Chief Joseph Angelino, Frontier, Evening Sun Sales Associate Pam Jones, Rentals to Go and owner Gary Brightman, DJ Dick Talbot and the local businesses who support the event.
While the Cruise-In is a great way to kick off the car show weekend, LoPresti said it is also another way to bring more people to downtown Norwich, which is one of the BID’s biggest goals. “I want to encourage the entire community to come out and look at the vehicles parked in and around East Park this weekend,” LoPresti said.
